Cette voiture unique a été construite aux USA par Fred Davies, un ingénieur anglais qui avait d’abord émigré au Canada dans les années 1950 où il finit par travailler pour le constructeur de voitures de course Bill Sadler. Il participa à la construction de la Sadler Mk3 sport-compétition et des monoplaces Sadler Formule Junior.
Fred Davies quitta ensuite Sadler et partit en Californie où il trouva un atelier près de Los Angeles en 1961. C’est là qu’il construisit une voiture sport de compétition de sa propre conception utilisant un châssis en treillis tubulaire superbement fabriqué, une carrosserie en aluminium, un moteur Chevrolet V8 et une boît e Huffaker, cette dernière étant une des transmissions les mieux adaptées disponibles à l’époque. Les rapports internes étaient facilement interchangeables par l’arrière de la boîte Huffaker et le panneau arrière de la voiture était conçu pour faciliter l’opération. À la date où la voiture fut achevée en 1962, les priorités de Davies avaient changé et il ne la pilota jamais sur circuit.
La voiture avait été conçue pour rouler en USRCC ( l’ancètre du Can-Am) Mais les lois étant largement différentes de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, il l’utilisa occasionnellement sur la route.
La voiture fût ensuite stockée jusqu’en 1975 avant d’être vendue au négociant Brian Classic au Royaume-Uni. Brian Classic vendit la voiture à un collectionneur néerlandais qui la céda à Pierre Haverland, un neurologue et gentleman driver belge, qui, sans certitude sur les origines de la voiture, l’enregistra auprès de la FIA comme une Genie. Erreur compréhensible car la Davies ressemble beaucoup aux Genie sport-compétition construites par Joe Huffaker. Le belge fit restaurer totalement la Davies par Peter Dentry au Royaume-Uni et la pilota dans des épreuves historiques en Europe jusqu’en 1983. Puis il vendit la voiture en Suède où elle courut jusqu’en 2004 avant d’être revendue à nouveau en Belgique où elle resta jusqu’en juin de l’année passée. Date à laquelle elle fut vendue aux enchères au Festival of Speed de Goodwood.
Avec un V8 Chevrolet de 375cv, et un poids total qui est inférieur au 700kg, grâce notamment à la carrosserie entièrement en aluminium, il est évident que les performances sont bien plus en relation avec les circuits américains que les boulevards de nos villes européenes. Cette voiture unique est probablement la seule véritable CanAm de course pouvant être immatriculée pour la route ! Voici donc un peu plus d’explications sur le CanAM.
Le CanAm, abréviation de Canadian-American Challenge Cup était un championnat automobile qui se déroulait en Amérique du Nord (2 courses au Canada, et 4 aux Etats Unis). On retiendra le genre particulier de cette compétition, c’est-à-dire presque sans restriction règlementaire quant à la puissance des moteurs ou à l’aréodynamique. Les règles très basiques permettaient divers types de moteurs, d’améliorations (turbo ou compresseur) et d’innovations, ce qui donna comme résultat une véritable compétition de puissance et de technologie.
Parmi les pilotes célèbres on distingue Bruce-Mclaren, 2 fois champion grâce à ses propres voitures. Ainsi que Jacky Ickx en 1979 sur Lola – Chevrolet.
